The Sith Be With Us
I acquired a new appreciation for the recent Star Wars trilogy which ended with the Republic conquering the world and reverting a society in a dark age. According to a very "intuit"* Star Wars fan, George Lucas as always doesn't intend for audience to watch his movies for what it is but for the message the lies beneath it, after all politics run in his veins while writing it. Second, he is a business man which is pretty obvious by now.
But the symbolism of it all overwhelmed the third movie. Yoda's fight scene with Darth Sidious in the Senate--two opposing forces/parties has sent a house of justice and freedom crumbling down. Obi-Wan's fight with General Grievous was an ominous reminder of the struggle between the environment vs. advancement. Padme's quote on the dying democracy while the crowd around her cheered and Palpatine's enforcement of the New Republic while the crowd also cheered.
I can't help but wonder if this world is coming to that age of darkness once more. With all these wars pounding upon us I remember Yoda and Obi-wan's words, "Failed have I", still ringing in my mind. This is an all true reminder that there are at least forces out there who try to retain the balance in the world but they can only do as much, hope is coming to an end.
I felt for Anakin in the end when he was already Darth Vader, I really do. When he and Sidious were looking at the planet from the outside the camera zoomed in on Vader for a mere 10 seconds. You cannot see how he reacted but I can feel inside Darth Vader/Anakin was saying or breathing to himself I got screwed by evil. I didn't save Padme, I failed Obi-wan and now I will dwell on the dark side forever...
The fourth chapter of "Star Wars: A New Hope" began twenty years after the dark times. Will it take our world today twenty more years before peace comes around once more? This is a reality I'm too scared to bear. After all, when I look at it Lucas' made the first "Star Wars" at the time when the Vietnam war ended. Twenty years later he made the prequels about the start of a new order and the downfall of democracy. Now, you wouldn't think that's just pure coincidence, don't you?
*I guess you are aware this is a pun.
