Titi ni Ewan
At this point if you're a Pinoy, you'd be snickering at the title...
I always look forward to foreign film festivals in Manila. Since we are an economically-challenged nation, the only draw to a foreign movie (i narrow it down to being subtitled or non-commercial for film enthusiasts) was that whoever's country was sponsoring always offered it for free. Such was the case for CineEuropa -- the finest European films and animations as well as a few Asian and Filipino short films(read my lips, high heaven!!!)
Another bigger draw to an indie movie is when there's a "tit-", ahem, a titillating buzz. And this is where the story of an indie movie called "Young Adam", which only starred Ewan McGregor and his penis, picked up. Some curious elements who severely lack an appreciation for a story (but make it up on visual interest) have suddenly discovered a free, liberated art type of world only the censorship board would not touch (case in point, "Bridges in Madison County" was a hit because of only one scene, when Meryl Streep bared her pubes).
The curious came in hordes, with children in tow, of course. The scene could only be described as a disorganized mob hungry for screen lust (well, okay they are also interested in the story, whatever). No amount of "pakikiusap" or asking for help can make them understand, I mean, human nature here working. What type of individual would miss a premier showing of a private part that is larger than life (this is still about the story okay). I felt pity to the organizers who almost got trampled on, this is an unpleasant way to die. But on the bright side, independent movies can use some patronage for a change, and I hope not always for the wrong reasons.
